Whitechapel - ITV1 Crime Thriller

Whitechapel, ITV1 Drama – Mondays, 9pm

Last night ITV1 showed the second of three episodes of the best drama currently on UK television.

Whitechapel is an exceptional crime thriller based in modern day London where a series of murders are taking place by a copycat Jack the Ripper murderer 120 years after Britain’s most infamous serial killer first struck.

In London 2008 under the watchful eye of a CCTV-safe society and the added assurances of modern crime-stopping DNA evidence, a modern day Jack The Ripper copycat manages to recreate the original murders with pinpoint accuracy.

Detective Inspector Joseph Chandler (Rupert Penry-Jones) is assigned his first murder case with the intention of offering him a fast-track promotion.  But it isn’t long before DI Chandler is in too deep.

Detective Sergeant Ray Miles (Phil Davis) is a street-wise, hard-nosed DS, nearing retirement, who works on gut-feeling, and not always hard evidence; and Edward Buchan (Steve Pemberton) is a ‘Ripperologist‘ – a Ripper Tour Guide and expert on the original Victorian Jack The Ripper murders.

Edward Buchan can tell the police where the next copycat murder will take place, but can they work out how to stop him, and more importantly, catch the copycat serial killer?

Rupert Penry-Jones, Phil Davis and Steve Pemberton lead an excellent cast with an exceptional script.  Whitechapel is a moody, dark atmospheric British drama that beats all the American rubbish filling our TV screens right now.

You can catch up with Whitechapel by using the ITV Player to watch Whitelchapel episode 1 & 2.
