Lost – ‘LaFleur’

And there I was, hoping that now all the Lost survivors are back on the island, we would have less of the highly confusing, jumping around in time and place storylines!!! How wrong can you be?

I think I managed to get my head around last night’s voyage in time and space….Locke managed to stop the erratic time shifts which has left the group of survivors stuck in their current time frame – which is when the Dharma Initiative were still working on the island. Faraday see’s a young red haired girl who, I am guessing, is a young Charlotte – thus confirming her story of Faraday warning her to leave the island when she was a child.

Forward 3 years and the survivors are all living a fairly pleasant life with Sawyer (LaFleur) and Juliet in love and looking very happy and content – all of which I’m sure is about to be obliterated by the arrival of Kate and co.

Now I have some questions, was it just the survivors who appeared on the island in the white flash who located the exact position in time to find Sawyer etc and did the rest of the passengers (including Locke and Ben) on the plane crash into the islands current time thus being separated from eachother by about 30 years?

Once the survivors are re-united, will they still have the option of returning home via the submarine which hasn’t yet been destroyed, or is this impossible or unfeasible because of the time difference?

If Amy was able to give birth successfully on the island, what has happened subsequently to stop women being able to give birth there?

When will they encounter the young Ben who must be around at that time?

Annoyingly we have to wait for 2 weeks to find out what happens next – WHY!!!!

More of our Lost questions get answered as we finally find out how Jeremy Bentham aka John Locke came to be dead!

Lost – Sky 1, Sunday 9pm

‘The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham’

More of our Lost questions get answered as we finally find out how Jeremy Bentham aka John Locke came to be dead!

As series 5 creeps on we are being fed more and more information that points toward Charles Widmore not being the villain that Ben has always made him out to be. In fact, Benjamin Linus is looking increasingly like the real ‘bad guy’ of the show. But, as always, I am forced to withhold judgement for now as these pesky writers do try and lead us avid Lost fans astray with their storylines.

We already knew that Ben’s scheeming and ruthlessness knew no bounds, even down to killing his own father, but I for one had assumed that it was his devotion to the Island and protecting it from enemies (particularly Charles Widmore) that fuelled this behaviour. In fact the reason he left the Island was to protect it and if he (Ben) is the evil one then wouldn’t Richard Alpert and the rest of the others have dealt with him by now?

In last nights show it was Widmore who appeared to be protecting John and helping him with his mission while Ben strangely saved John from hanging himself…..only to murder him!!! And when we see Locke trying to work out how he had returned to the Island at the end of the show, we find out that the Oceanic survivors (including Locke) all magically transported to the Island in the flash of white light while the others on-board flight 817 (including Ben) only made it to the Island by crashing into it! Hmmm….

One final act of evilness that I hope Ben hasn’t committed is killing Penny Widmore and possibly little Charlie but the end of episode 6 seemed to point to just that. As it stands at the moment – Widmore’s only crime is sending the soldiers to find the Island and get Ben (although why didn’t he go with them if he wanted to return to the Island?) while Ben is a rampant serial killer and conman…..hmmmm again!

Now all the survivors are back hopefully future episodes will concentrate on the Island and start revealing a few more of it’s mysteries….oh damn I forgot about Desmond maybe there are a few on/off episodes left to come!

What a cracking week the industry has in store for us next week, and can I add it’s about time! Television viewing has become so dire lately I have taken to reading books again!!

It starts with return of our favourite presenter and guest show host, finally back on our screens after his… ahem…extended Christmas break in Friday Night With Jonathan Ross showing on Friday 23 January, BBC One at 10.35pm.

Unfortunately his first guest will not be Andrew Sachs which I think would be a much better way of drawing a line under the whole ‘Sachsgate’ episode rather than trying to pretend we have all forgotten about it. Instead we will be seeing him chatting to meglamaniac dwarf Tom Cruise, sweat machine Lee Evans and the lovely Stephen Fry with music from Franz Ferdinand. No gorgeous girls for him to leer over or guests that may lead him into controversy. Shame!

Lost – Series 5, Sky 1, Sunday 25 January 9pm

Lost returns on Sunday 25 January, arriving in the nick of time to rescue us from our post-Christmas slump.

The penultimate series begins with an episode titled ‘Because You Left‘ – intriguing as usual, would that be referring to Ben or Locke or indeed any of the other characters in the show?

I haven’t noticed any catch-up shows advertised as yet though. These are always helpful because the storylines are so complex and convoluted (especially with the flash-back, flash-forward thingy) that I can’t always remember were we are at when a new series begins.

The big difference this time is that the main objective of the Oceanic 6 (and Benjamin Linus) is to return to the Island – not escape from it, but is that just because they want to help rescue the other survivors or because they realise the Island is where they belong?

Oh, and is Locke REALLY dead?!!!

New Sci-fi Shows on TV

It was a sad goodbye to Charlie Boorman on Sunday as he finally reached his destination in Ireland to Sydney by Any Means. Great show but I did miss the banter he and Ewan usually share on their escapades.

Two new shows I am perservering with are the completely over-hyped Fringe on Sky 1, Sunday 9pm and Sanctuary on ITV4, Monday 9pm.

They are both the type of show I usually enjoy but I’m finding it very hard to warm to them. The formats are okay, if a little unoriginal, and the effects are good but the characters seem a little shallow.

Unfortunately for them the shows they are trying to emulate are just too excellent to match.

New Star Trek movie aside, I think Lost creator JJ Abram’s will find it very hard to repeat the success he has with the cult show.

With 2008 disappearing faster than our high street banks!….I’m eagerly awaiting news on the return of any of my favourite shows and it looks like the Sky 1 website has just the thing…photo’s of the new series of Torchwood currently being filmed in Cardiff. Click on the link to get your fix!

Where Have all the Good Shows Gone?

All of my favourite shows seem to be disappearing off of the screen; Lost, Inbetweeners, Desperate Housewives (disappearing mid-season really is poor!),Torchwood, Bionic Woman and I hear that this season of Brothers & Sisters will be the last – thank goodness we still have Heroes and a few episodes of Doctor Who left to fill the summer void!!

If I enjoyed the soaps or reality TV then my viewing schedule would be overflowing but alas, British soaps are far too depressing and the majority of DIY, reality, do-up-your house, sell-your-house-and-make-lots-of-money, go-live-abroad-disaster-that-turns-out-ok! shows have been so overdone that watching them is predictable and boring.

I watch TV for entertainment, to escape reality and maybe to learn something new and interesting – so what will be dominating our primetime viewing for the next 13 weeks – BB9!!!

For those of you who get the extra channels, ITV3 are screening the whole first series of Primeval on Saturday starting at 2.15pm. It will be followed at 8.15pm with ‘Primeval – Behind the Scenes’, unfortunately there is nothing of interest to fill the Pushing Daisies void or indeed the Lost void on Sunday, unless you have been watching Greek, BBC3, 9pm, I haven’t watched it so I can’t comment on it’s entertainment value. If you are missing Pushing Daisies then visit the ITV.com site to view a ‘magic unseen’ episode called ‘Dummy‘.

Does anyone watch a great show that they could recommend? Please just drop me a line in the comment box below.

It looks like I might have some time on my hands, time to get on my bike, get the gardening done, hopefully we will have a long hot summer…..!

Lost – The Answers Are Here, Sky One, Sunday 11pm

The show that promised us answers – and did we get any…..NO!

Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof managed to throw enough titbits our way to whet our appetite for season 5. Or maybe they were just throwing out red herrings!

We did learn that moving the island is know as the ‘Kasmir Effect’ but a whole new can of worms was opened with the revelation that time travel will be a major plotline, dropping phrases like ‘wormhole’ and ‘electromagnetism’. So, we not only need to know where the island has moved to but when….maybe!

It seems the big players in the coming seasons are going to be Christian Shepherd and Charles Widmore and I would guess Benjamin Linus as he and Widmore are definitely embroiled in something together. They said another main character would die in season 5 (how many can we lose?) but of course that doesn’t mean they stay dead with all the time line to-ing and fro-ing!

It also seems that Josh Holloway will continue to play Sawyer (phew) but possibly with all his lovely locks shorn!!

One phrase I did pick up on was ‘safety trap‘. Now Cuse and Lindelof said they had a ‘safety trap’. for Benjamin Linus in the event his character (or he as an actor?) didn’t work out – but of course he did. They then revealed that the ‘safety trap‘ had been used before – what I want to know is, for who?

Where do I start……so much information, so many more questions!

We now know the season 3 finale flash-forwards were set 3 years after the Oceanic 6 returned home. We know how Benjamin Linus appeared in the middle of the desert. We know why only 6 survivors returned home and why they lied about their time on the island. And we also know the ‘big one’, that the body in the coffin was Jeremy Bentham aka John Locke.

Unfortunately so many questions remain unanswered and many new ones now spring to mind!! Here are my main questions, in list form because there are so many!

Why did Locke return to the mainland and did he commit suicide because he couldn’t return to the island or was he murdered?

What is Aaron’s connection to the island? The psychic Claire visited while she was pregnant foresaw something dreadful ahead, and his mother, uncle and grandfather (Claire, Jack & Christian) were all pulled to the island. Is he the reason for Oceanic 815 crashing?

Why do Claire and Christian want Jack to keep Aaron away from the island?

Why can Jack only return to the island if he is with all the others and does that include Desmond and Walt? What is the connection between Jack and Desmond (‘I’ll see you in another life brother’)?

We found out that Charlotte was previously on the island – what is her connection to it?

Were all the people on the freighter killed when it exploded, because there were no bodies in the water? Christian appearing to Michael leads me to think he has somehow got them back to the island.

Why is Sun arranging to meet with Charles Widmore?

And finally…..WHEN DOES SEASON 5 START?!!!!

If anyone has any answers or theories PLEASE drop me a comment below.

Great episode filling in lots of gaps in the flash-back, flash-forward clips. At this rate I don’t know how the writers are going to sustain another 2 series – so I guess we are going to get completely thrown in next Sunday’s 2-part finale!

We see the Oceanic 6 arriving back home and initially maintaining close links with each other. What we don’t know is how these 6 were the only ones who made it back, and what happened to the rest of the survivors including Michael and Desmond who were already on the freighter?

Hurley continues to maintain strong links with the island, even his old car has the lottery numbers, the numbers from the bunker, displaying on his dashboard.

We also see how Jack and his family are inextricably linked to the island, but why did Aaron have to escape the island? Are Claire and their father protecting Aaron or working for Jacob/the island?

Ben surrenders to Keamy, could this be how he appeared in the middle of the desert? Which means the fate of the island is in Locke’s hands – finale cliffhanger?

Lost – ‘Cabin Fever’, Sky One, Sunday 9pm

Last night’s show delved much deeper into John Locke’s past and it appears he has always had a very strong connection with the Island. As a newborn baby he received a hospital visit from the Islander (whose name I can’t remember!) and another from him as an older child, in much the same way as Ben did when he was a child, only already on the Island.

From what we already know of Locke’s past he appeared to be very unlucky, but whilst in hospital he was contacted by another Islander, working as a hospital porter, who told him to view his past in a positive way – he survived being pushed out of a window by his father, he survived his mother prematurely giving birth to him after being mown down by a car! He also suggested Locke go on a walkabout, which is what led him to being on Oceanic flight 815.

So was the whole reason for the plane crashing, just to get John on the Island?

Back on the freighter Keamy is on the warpath and prepares to torch the entire Island. Sayid, aided by the Captain, manages to escape with a dinghy and heads back to the Island to try to rescue as many of the survivors as he can but Desmond doesn’t want to return with him.

After a dream showing him where to find a map that locates Jacob’s cabin, Locke, Ben and Hurley make their way to it, but only Locke goes in. Inside he finds Jack’s dad (!) and Claire (!) they tell him baby Aaron must get off the Island and to save the Island………he must move it!

Was Ben just a temporary replacement as Island ‘protector’ until Locke found it?

Is Claire dead and if not why isn’t she leaving the Island with Aaron? Will Jack find out she is his half-sister?

Why does Jack’s dad have such a strong connection with the Island?

In this week flash-forward we see Jack and Kate playing happy families with young Aaron, but it doesn’t take long for it to all start going rapidly down hill! Just a visit to Hurley in fact. Hurley gives Jack a message from the deceased Charlie which reads ‘You’re not meant to raise him!’. Jack starts seeing his dead father, finds out Kate still has some connection with Saywer and suddenly he is back on the booze and drugs!

Is Hurley right – are they all dead? Most of them had severe psychological problems before they even got to the Island, so maybe they are all inmates in a mental institute and the whole incident is imagined!

Only 3 more episodes to go and there is a treat in the final show, in the form of Greg Grunberg (Matt Parkman in Heroes) who will reprise his role as the pilot of Oceanic 815. Now I know most of you avid sci-fi fans will yawn and say you already know that, but my memory isn’t that great, and the first series was sooooo long ago that I didn’t even realise he was in it!!
